Cataloguer, Early Printed Books – French Revolutionary Tracts
Fixed term contract until 31 March 2013
Salary: From £24,828 per annum
Hours: Full time – 36 hours per week

The British Library holds one of the world’s finest collections of early and rare printed books from Britain and Europe, including a very extensive collection of books, pamphlets and serials published in France between 1780 and 1820.We are now looking for a cataloguer to create detailed catalogue records for a selection of material from this collection. An excellent reading knowledge of French is therefore required.
The work will involve creating individual entries for each item in accordance with international standards for rare book cataloguing, either in the form of new records or enhancing existing records where appropriate, and adding detailed copy notes and holdings information. You will also use a range of reference tools to establish the historical and physical record of the material.
You will be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant humanities subject with a formal qualification in library studies or substantial experience of rare book cataloguing in a professional environment. Your familiarity with UK and international standards for cataloguing printed materials will be essential, as is the ability to work accurately with attention to detail, while meeting specific targets. Knowledge of the French Revolutionary period will be an advantage.
